2008 Ladies WSOP Final Table Led by Svetlana Gromenkova

Published by pokermom at 9:51 am under World Series of Poker (WSOP) Edit This

The 2008 Ladies No-Limit Hold’em World Championship final table will be played today.  Svetlana Gromenkova, who has three previous WSOP cashes, will be in first chip position as the final table starts with $553,000 in chips.  The other ladies who will be vying for the $224,753 first place prize are Christine Priday, Patty Till, Debbie Mitchell, Sue Porter, Yesenia Garcia, Anh Le, Marla Crumpler and Roslyn Quarto.

None of the ladies playing at this final table have a WSOP bracelet to their name although Anh Le did take second place in the 2005 WSOP Ladies No-Limit event.  Kathy Liebert, who has been playing well at the 2008 WSOP, placed 47th.

Years ago, I read a book by Annie Duke in which she discussed the mathematics of playing the Ladies WSOP.  She was playing in another tournament at the time the Ladies event was happening and a reporter from ESPN (if I recall correctly) asked her why she wasn’t playing in the Ladies event.  Her reply was along the lines that the numbers just didn’t add up.  The buy-in was smaller, the field was smaller and thus the payout was smaller.  I am pretty sure that this happened the year that she won her bracelet in the Omaha High-Low Eight or Better event (2004).  Smart choice Annie!

Just a random question for you. What’s your view on having “ladies’” tournaments? I think in a game where there is no physical difference between men and women, and where women play with the men all the time, having ladies’ tournaments seems kind of odd. Just wondering what your thoughts on that were.

Good question, here in Arizona we have a Ladies and a Mens state poker championship tourney. I will play ladies tournaments locally because they are usually a smaller group of people and I don’t always have 8+ hours to sit for a tourney.

However, I prefer mixed play. A table of ladies is a rough bunch to play with - we’re all devious creatures by nature. *wink*
