Females in the World Series of Poker Main Event
As poker’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, more and more women are being found at poker tables both online and in poker rooms. The question comes up every year during the World Series of Poker Main Event – will a female win this year? Some people have their head in the sand and say that women can’t play poker as well as men so they’ll say no. As a numbers kind of gal, I look at the big picture. The proportion of men to women players in the main event is drastic and thus the odds are that a woman will not win the main event.
Even though the odds are stacked in favor of the men, women poker players have definitely proven that they are a force to be reckoned with. In September of 2007, 18 year old Annette Obrestad of Norway won the WSOPE main event. Deanna Goodson of chicksnchips.com had this to say about Obrestad’s win “Annette is also the only woman to ever win a WSOP Main Event. She has shattered the glass ceiling in an industry and event series long dominated by men. We are so proud of her and can’t wait to see what this girl has in store for the poker world next.”
As the 2008 World Series of Poker gets started later this month I will definitely be keeping my eye on some of the top female players – Jen Harman, Mimi Tran, Vanessa Rousso, Clonie Gowen, Annie Duke and more.

You listed some great female poker players For the more I would not count out Cathy Liebert (the number one player in overall earnings) JJ Liu, Kristy Gazes, Erica Shoenberg, and of course Linda Johnson - the first lady of poker. Just a few more of the ladies I will be watching. Cyndy Violette is a force to be reckoned with and Jennifer Tilly has come a long way since she first started. With the ever increasing popularity of poker, more females will be playing and further enhance the chance of becoming the WSOP player of the year and possibly winning the main event.
People tend to forget that Jennifer Tilly has a WSOP bracelet, her play has been solid lately that’s for sure. Thanks for the post Ba.
Hey this is poker, there may only be one out and 30 cards still left in the deck, but it only takes 1 card to turn your open ended straight/flush draw into a straight flush!
Exactly Kateianne!
